Sparks Fly was a serious proposition in the mud over 1m last autumn, so requires a second look despite needing to have come on a ton since her reappearance. Last year's renewal showed the hazards of trying to find a way through in a bunched finish at this track but there might be enough pace in today's race to sort them out more effectively and that could prove good news for ROYAL DRESS, one of last year's chief sufferers. Another strong late bid could be delivered by the 3yo Bermuda Longtail, who is far less experienced but brings clear potential.[Richard Austen]

The shortlist for this year's Diomed is headed by the only runners who already have Epsom form, namely the largely progressive PERSICA and last year's runner-up Royal Dubai. Their proven ability to handle this idiosyncratic track counts for plenty. Docklands has the best chance assuming his smart Ascot form is transferred to this venue, while German challenger Geography and sole 3yo Royal Playwright add interest.[Steve Boow]

A 6lb rise means RUBY'S PROFIT requires another personal best after having three of these behind her at Goodwood last month, but she's absolutely thriving and a fast 5f is right up her street. She should not be seriously inconvenienced if rain softens the ground and she gets the verdict ahead of the bang-in-form Blinky (second choice), Gold Star Hero and Against The Wind. Mademoiselle was the selection's closest pursuer at Goodwood and should again run well, while Glorious Kitty is hard to pin down after just three runs and could take a big step forward on her handicap debut.[Richard O'Brien]

Fair Wind wasn't able to show what he's capable of at Chester on his reappearance but he did break on terms so hopefully last year's Goodwood refusal was an isolated incident. He's capable of further progress, while Jer Batt and last year's winner Dream Composer (second choice) also have something to recommend them. Jm Jungle comes here at the top of his game but he didn't look a natural at the track when running in the 3yo Dash in 2023. The frustrating Existent can feature but VINTAGE CLARETS is preferred. The selection wasn't at his best in this race in 2023 but that was on fast ground and he's a different proposition when the going is slower. In the hope that there's been sufficient rain, he's taken to build on an eyecatching run at York last month when he travelled powerfully but couldn't quite claw back the principals. He's drawn near some good pace and can be produced with a late flourish.[Paul Smith]

This year's Derby is named in honour of the late Aga Khan, one of the most famous owner-breeders of recent times. His colours are carried by the supplemented Midak, an unbeaten 3yo with potential to leave his existing form well behind. It looks a superb running of the race, though, better than when Auguste Rodin and City Of Troy rose to the occasion for the last two years. Aidan O'Brien has had big words for The Lion In Winter but the stamina question hangs in the air after he was over-excited in the early stages of his York comeback and never seriously threatened, and it's DELACROIX (nap) who can do the honours for Ballydoyle. He has already shown some of the resolution of his brilliant dam Tepin, who could do it any which way, and it was encouraging that such a scopey horse could produce the speed he found when winning at Leopardstown in May. The main dangers are Pride Of Arras, who has been as impressive as any of these in the closing stages of his two runs, most recently at York in a well-established trial for the Derby, and the 2,000 Guineas winner Ruling Court. At bigger prices the Gosden pair Damysus and Nightwalker can also go well, along with Stanhope Gardens and Aidan O'Brien's third runner Lambourn.[Emily Weber]

The amount of rain which has fallen looks a key factor, including as Miller Spirit should be one of the chief beneficiaries if there's been a downpour, while Candyman Stan and Great Bedwyn are among several prominent candidates who could be inconvenienced. The lightly raced Valvano shaped well on his reappearance and Dream Harder returned to winning form last Saturday but preference is for SMALL FRY, who should not mind how much rain there's been and is one of those who has proved himself at this track. He gets the vote whatever the weather and stablemate Miller Spirit may follow him home if the race is run on soft ground.[Richard Austen]

Going - Good to soft-good in places

  • Racing Post Racing Post Verdict

A lesser show on soft going last November and a wet weather forecast are the worries for GRECIAN LEGACY but there was a great deal to like about his reappearance win and it may well be too early for hard-and-fast conclusions about his ground requirements. Progressive 1m2f handicapper War Hawk is second on the list, just ahead of the newly gelded Hornsea Bay for whom this new trip makes appeal. Meblesh and Cayman Dancer are the least exposed, having had three runs apiece prior to this handicap debut.[Richard Austen]

The forecast rain puts EYE OF DUBAI and Strike Red at the top of the shortlist, as they would be particularly interesting if the ground is riding soft. Circe (third choice) and Sondad may well prove capable of further improvement, while a few others also have possibilities.[Steve Boow]
